Codex Black: A Fire Among Clouds

By Perfect Turd | Apr 06, 2023

We consider ourselves warriors. Yes, B-movie warriors, on a quest to find the best bad movies the world has to offer. As noble and exciting as that sounds, it's nothing compared to the quest of the characters in IDW's newest graphic novel, Codex Black: A Fire Among Clouds.

Codex Black SYNOPSIS:

Donají is a fearless Zapotec girl who, even though she’s only fifteen, is heralded as a hero by her village. In Codex Black, Donají sets out on an adventure–accompanied by the god that lives inside of her poncho–to find her missing father. Along the way, she meets a 17-year-old winged Mexica warrior named Itzcacalotl, and over time their temporary partnership blooms into an incredible friendship. The search brings the young pair closer to danger and deeper into the mystery than either could have predicted. What exactly was Donají’s father involved with? And how did a simple search for a missing relative lead Donají and Itzcacalotl into a fight with a terrifying bat monster to defend an entire village?

Why we like it:

While Codex Black is aimed at young adult readers, there was still enough to keep our faces in the pages. As kids that grew up on Indiana Jones and The Goonies, we appreciated the author's blend of adventure, humor, and history.

Speaking of history, one cool element of the book is the guide in the back. The guide contains a name glossary that teaches the correct pronunciation and meanings behind the character names. It also has a detailed explanation of places, historical context, and religious mythos on which the story is built.

We found that to be a nice touch indeed!

If you have young adult readers in the house and you're trying to keep them busy while you watch hideous B-movies with us, check out  Codex Black: Fire Among Clouds , available now!
